250 Years of American Independence and the Things Made to Last
America turns 250 next week. A quarter of a millennium of independence, of building, of making. As we mark this milestone from our little studio in Ann Arbor, we find ourselves thinking about what it has always meant to make something by hand in this country.
The tradition of American craft runs deep: the saddler, the cobbler, the harness maker. Long before mass production changed how goods were made, American craftsmen built things intended to outlast the person who bought them. That is still what we try to do every day at Arbor Trading Post: make things that hold up, that age honestly, and that become more yours with every use.
We are proud to source some of our leather from the finest tanneries right here in the United States, alongside tanneries in Italy whose traditions stretch back centuries. American-tanned hides carry that same spirit - cured slowly, with integrity, built for the long haul. When you carry one of our pieces, you are carrying a small piece of that lineage.
So this Fourth of July, as fireworks light up the Ann Arbor sky and families gather around backyard tables, we are raising a quiet toast to the makers. To everyone who still believes the best things are built by hand. Thank you for supporting us, and for being part of what we are building here.

With gratitude, Isabel & Shailesh Arbor Trading Post

The 250th Anniversary Leather Patch Cap
To mark America's 250th birthday, we handcrafted a limited run of caps, each finished with a leather patch laser engraved to commemorate the anniversary. The patch is engraved, cut and finished by hand right here in Ann Arbor. It is a small thing, but it is made to last well past the celebration.
Whether you wear it to the cookout next weekend or reach for it on every summer errand, it will age with you. Softening at the brim, darkening at the patch, the way only real leather does.

Vegetable Tanned vs. Chrome Tanned Leather: Which Should You Actually Buy?
The difference between these two tanning methods comes down to chemistry, time, and what you want from a leather good over its full lifespan. If you have ever wondered why two wallets that look identical can age so differently, read on to find out why.

Why Unfinished Edges Are a Red Flag in "Handmade" Leather Products
When you first pick up a leather product, your attention goes to the feel, the smell, the design. But the real test of quality often hides in a place most people overlook: the edges. Here is what to look for and why it matters.
